Hi Sarah, I thought you might be interested in a good news story on this - could be inspiring - when I was working for WPP (v. large media/advertising group) in London the company got involved in CSR because basically it was a selling point when pit…

Profile Information

About Me:
I'm a founding member of Intersect and what can I say! This social networking thing is fantastic!

About me: I grew up in Marlborough and studied at Canterbury and Lincoln Universities.

I love to play the piano, sing, and keep fit.

I'm passionate about renewable energies and interested in innovative and sustainable electricity systems.

Admittedly, I fit in the Generation Y bracket. Having been in the workforce for a number of years now, I can see we are a challenging bunch. We have ambitious dreams and really do make things happen! Although I think we do scare some people.

When I'm not helping run Intersect, I manage resource consents and environmental matters for Transpower (our National Grid) in the Wellington-Manawatu-Ruapehu area, and Tasman and West Coast regions. Next year I will be doing a Certificate in Management Studies at Vic Uni, which should prove to be a challenge, and an exciting one at that.

The more you learn, the more you realise you don't know. How fantastic is that folks.
Areas of interest and expertise
Resource consenting
Environmental Science
Wind Energy Policy, Planning and ATTITUDES
Classical Music and Piano (try me)
Young Professional Development - yep, damn it, after years of developing Intersect, I'm an expert.

Hey Sarah, sounds like your in deep already. I am doing a full time year of Environmental Studies at Vic and just completed a sustainable energy course and environmental management course, both excellent. Happy to give you info on either if you like.

I have a growing interest in the ATTITUDES thing too. Behavior change etc.
Friends put together Powershop recently and that is interesting, but who in the public really understands what it means or knows about it, even with a few ad's on telly?

Getting across the messages that change peoples behavior is a must for all of the green changes that are needed, because what is evident after some study this year is the 'will' of the people creates change perhaps more powerfully than policy.

Hi Sarah, yes Seresin is certainly into sustainability.

We have 2 of our three vineyards fully certified organic (BioGro, since 2000, 2001) and the third in its second year of conversion. We were the first Marlborough winery with certified organic wines and also practice biodynamics across all three properties (in transition to certification - Demeter).

As well as the certification aspects of the winegrowing, true sustainability is a fundamental part of our culture and philosophy. Some of the other things we do you might find interesting:
- we make our own compost teas and seaweed teas
- we use bio-diesel (sourced from used cooking oil , not food)
- as well as growing wine, we grow olives and make olive oil, we have a wonderful vege garden, orchard, chickens, ducks, a milking cow (milk, cheese and gelato are nice side benefits to her manure which is why we really need her), cattle for beef, sheep, and soon horses will be making an appearance on the vineyards
- we make our own biodynamic preparations
- we collect (organic) egg-shells and (organic) coffee grinds from cafes and restaurants we sell wine and olive oil to, for our compost (several hundred tonnes of compost a year)
- we host open days, field-days and a monthly biodynamic discussion group to help and encourage others to adopt organic and biodynamic practices.
- we were involved in setting up the Marlborough Convivium for Slow Food (www.slowfood.com)

For more see our blog http://seresinestate.blogspot.com

Do you attend Green Drinks in Marlborough? I haven't been able to make it recently due to family commitments (a 4th child - I should be committed !), but it would be good to catchup sometime. Come up for a visit ? wine and oil tasting compulsory !

Cheers
MJ

Thanks Sarah,
Yea there are two core staff and then a bunch of support staff across the business. I imagine you and I have some similar issues to deal with at times. For example with "NIMBY" issues.
