I'll chip in... First off, the words are signposts pointing in a direction. I agree words matter, and I think the distinction you are making is pointing to something beyond sustainability. What I like about thrivability is the buoyant energy it has…

i'm definitely pro abundance. i don't believe that sustainability exists, and if it did it would probably be beige and a bit like a sensible pair of ortho shoes that you don't want anyone to know that you own.

Hi Megan! Thanks for your lovely post. I totally agree. Someone mentioned the world thrivability to me in 2007, and I have been questing after it ever since because it resonated so deeply. See thrivability.wordpress.com for some of my explorations o…

I'm also feeling fed up with 'green', 'eco' and 'sustainability'. It is boring to use the same words over and over again! I try and use words without baggage, like 'smart' and 'forward-thinking' but sometimes they don't fit the context. I love 'thri…

So on the 9am news this morning, 'Tentative plans' are announced for our John to go. He has received our letters, so I like to think that we had an influence - peer pressure, and positive thought. Attached is a copy of the letter that we sent him.

What I love about this wee 'campaign' is that it is a heart opener - for both the writer and the recipient. I think this style of advocacy has the potential to be very powerful. It seems to me that this is not the Age for angry protest (they hardly…

Profile Information

About Me:
I’ve got the hots for web-based interaction that is community and participation-centric that empowers users to 'network' their butts off. I am also interested how deep that networking can be.

I can now call myself a Social Entreprenuer, because i looked at wikipedia, and it describes all other 'stuff' I do.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_entrepreneurship

I currently serve as the chair of the Sustainability Trust. Our trust enables people to adopt new sustainable behaviours. www.sustaintrust.org.nz

I helped to establish this young professionals network for young(ish) people who are passionate about cultural transformation and sustainability. Meet the trustees:
www.intersect.org.nz

My favourite things about the ‘new world’ that I see emerging around me today; a culture of care, new and remembered social processes, the opportunities for connection and meaning that the quest for ‘sustainability’ creates, deeply happy people who hold complexity with grace.

I also love the ukulele. It is a significant part of creating a happier world. www.ukulele.co.nz
Areas of interest and expertise
Strategic Communication Design, Networking, Behaviour Change, Online Community, Organisational Learning, Creative Process, Social Innovation, Ukulele, Harmonisin'

Sustainability schmustainability

What's in a name?
I've been banging on about sustainability for about 5 years now. Even so, I've always been allergic to the word. It never felt quite right.

And by that, I literally mean that it had an uncomfortable feeling associated with it. My perspective on this is that words carry intent… Continue

Bottoms

Oh - its a shameless way to get your attention, I know. But I've been thinking about bottoms a lot. Must be because I am about to get married, and the wedding diet hasn't been an outrageous success yet.

In fact, I've been thinking about all the less-celebrated parts of the body - the bottom, toes, the intestine, our underarms. Perhaps we don't celebrate them because they are smelly polluters. We don't value them as much as the face, breasts, lips and genitals...

And nations are like that too.… Continue

Ending my addiction to Aviation Fuel

I'm writing this on the bus from Wellington to Auckland. Its 5pm, and I've been on the road since 8am. This is the Naked Bus service, and the ticket cost me $38, even though I booked it late in the piece. I'm traveling up to Auckland to do a TV appearance with my band - the Wellington International Ukulele Orchestra. We will be on air for maybe 20 minutes, and then we are going to take the opportunity to do an in-store appearance at Real Groovy before coming home. Sure, love the fame and opportu… Continue

Nipple Fridge Takes the Prize

In the Page Blackie Gallery last night, Intersect - a national network of young leaders in sustainability - awarded 22 year old Amelia Hitchcock for her artwork “New Zealand Pure”. The artwork is a ‘dunger’ of a fridge - stacked with old fashioned baby bottles filled with water collected from lowland rivers around the artist’s home town , Wanganui.

“..In a nation that proclaims to the world to be ‘clean and green,’ 90% of our lowland rivers are so polluted, you cannot gather food or swim in the… Continue

Chocolate Flavoured People Power

Today’s U-turn by choc industry giant coupled with the latest youtube viral video has given me the last smidgeon of evidence that I need to back my personal belief that Human Beings Can Do Anything They Put Their Minds To.

In less than a fortnight, tens of thousands of people outraged over the injustice of… Continue
