Okay - I've been staying away from this group because I'm not ready to give up international air travel. But I've been exploring alternatives to air travel within NZ for the past two years and don't have a car so I'm pretty invested and interested...

About Me:
I'm a writer and a human rights and environmental advocate/activist. I've spent the past decade working on human rights in conflict and post-conflict countries including Timor-Leste, the Gaza Strip and most recently Afghanistan. I came home to New Zealand in early 2008 to recover, re-energise and refocus my efforts more locally.

When I was living in Afghanistan I became increasingly aware of the connection between people and their environment. I started to see the environmental damage as the bigger part of the picture. For years I'd been a human rights and social justice activist, and I thought environmental activists were somebody else. Somebody really good and important, but somebody different from me. I don't see it like that anymore.

So I'm now living car-free up in Paekakariki, learning to garden and to surf. I teach yoga (come along to one of my classes, listed below, I'd love to meet you) and organise the odd opportunities for yogis and yoginis to take their yoga off the mat and into the world with a little activism or guerilla kindness. I'm also writing a book about my life and work in Afghanistan.

The rest of the time I'm learning to have fun again. War zones can really knock the fun out of you. Luckily I have a pretty resilient fun bone.

Surprise!

You’re invited to our last Face-to-Face event for Wellington Intersectors for 2009 on November 24. There will be the usual sharing of ideas and inspirations, but this one is a little bit Christmas flavoured and it’s all about Giving.

There will be surprise gifts, crafty activities, ideas for 'sustainable' gifts and conversations about giving. You can get involved in any way that suits you - even if it's just to meet a few more people and enjoy some tasty treats.

...Pssst...pass it on!
Why not surprise someone from the Wellington Intersectors and post this invite on their profile?

Cheers!

Yaaaay!
Welcome to Intersect!
I think you will find many kindred spirits who are on board with your "gardening and meditation as activism". You can always create a group and see who turns up!

Looking forward to more intersections with you, Marianne! xx m
