Kia ora folks, I've just spent a month in China with Haikai Tane, studying the traditional terraquaculture farming systems there. It was fascinating. In China, they measure land area in mu. A mu is 666 m2 and is roughly enough land to feed 1 famil…

Super, was just lamenting the non-edible-ness of lupins when chucking them on the compost the other day. I will order maybe 5 kg of each. How much $ ?

It is amazing how they train those kereru to shit poroporo seeds in a perfect grid. Actually, I'm not convinced that kereru play such a large role, since I've only seen them in my orchard once, but I've got lots of poroporo everywhere. I'm trying…

I'd say both the small annual herb poroporo (deadly nightshade) and the larger tree poroporo are very useful "weedy" native plants. The small annual herb poroporo grows and seeds prolifically and is a very useful edible green when young (before fol…

This is a place where individuals and groups can be in communication around imagining and designing what a good future would be like, rather than one trying to be a little less bad.

Profile Information

About Me:
Tena koutou, I'm 33, live with Peter and our 2 young boys on our family farm. Our boys are the 5th generation of our family to live here, on the land that their great great grandfather burnt and cleared.

We moved back to the farm when we had our first boy. Since then, we've been designing and implementing our permaculture paradise .... slowly does it !

I'm obsessed with permaculture, terraquaculture, and sustainability. My mission is to create a great model of a highly productive sustainable small farm here. You know, rice paddies in the wetland with ducks and fish, integrated tree crops, that sort of thing....

I work at the Taranaki Environment Centre, where I teach permaculture courses and coordinate the Enviroschools Programme for Taranaki. I also have a business providing permaculture design & facilitation services for local families and community groups. But I am trying to ease back on the work to focus on the farm system.
Areas of interest and expertise
Permaculture, terraquaculture, food forests, organic growing, sustainable farming, local food, local markets & distribution, history & ecology of Te Ika a Maui and Mahunui, Te reo Maori (just learning), ethanol production, poos and wees, water in the landscape, change-making, bio-regional systems.

I like singing and playing the ukelele occasionally.

Hey Kama, great you took a look at the intercreate.org site, as yes I think there is alot of potential overlap with enviroschools and other things going on. We've partnered before with Puke Ariki and hope to again for future events. Sorry for the brain strain on the academic writing though! We are working on shifting how we wrote these things up, so to widen who gets involved. Garden meditation sounds nice... I am doing a bit the same (starting to) at the farm I am caretaking in Miranda. :)
