About Me:
Raised on a small farm in Ramarama, South Auckland my connection and understanding of ‘place’ and my relationship with the natural environment flourished. However, understanding and empathising how others fit into the system has taken me considerably longer.

An interesting and colourful youth in Papakura left me with unwavering ‘wanderlust’ which has since taken me to all corners of the earth – in search of what I am not entirely sure, but what I have found has been passion, determination and a deep sense of obligation to help other individuals do the same.

Fortunate to be engaged with a range of networks internationally, my vision is to return to New Zealand in October 2008 to put into practice a reasonably long list of academic know how – in the expectation of embarking on a huge learning curve, making some mistakes but in the end, substantially contributing to New Zealand’s part in moving society towards sustainability.

My bets are fully hedged on the people in this network being the key ‘firesouls’ that New Zealand needs right now to ‘become the first truly sustainable nation’ … (whatever that may mean!) Although I greatly appreciate all of the amazing work that has gone before us, we need more passion, more energy and more strategic thinking to ensure that we are moving in the ‘right direction’ to meet our sustainability vision.
I think the Intersect Young Professionals group are the Kiwis that can do it, as long as we move forward together.

I hope to explore these ideas and more during my three month journey home where I am continuing to expand both my professional and personal networks in Brussels, Dublin, New York, San Francisco, Nevada (Burning Man!), Vancouver and Melbourne.

See you all in October, tack så mycket.
Areas of interest and expertise
Recently I completed a Masters in Strategic Leadership towards Sustainability at the Blekinge Institute of Technology, Karlskrona, Sweden. My thesis group (of 3) looked at 'Co-creating Communities with a Needs Based approach to Urban Design and Development'. As a result we created an approach, a framework and method for implementing and practically applying our theory.

Upon my return to NZ in October I will start a teaching / facilitation / management position with The Centre for Sustainable Practice with Otago Polytechnic. The centre works with SMEs in the Otago region that are ready to become sustainability leaders in their field.

Prior to leaving NZ I was co-leading Project 2058 www.2058.net.nz, researching NZ's commitments to Agenda 21, undertaking a sustainability audit of the NZ government and questioning why NZ has not yet created a National Sustainable Development Strategy.

My background as an undergraduate is in law and ecology at Otago University 00-05

Graduate Certificate in Antarctic Studies (GCAS) at Canterbury Univeristy 06-07

International Law @ Helsinki University, Finland 03

Future Leaders Programme Participant 05-06

Hi Ella
I just did a search on Intersect to find people in Dunedin because
I wanted to invite you to a 350 Climate Action Group's FUN raiser, this coming Friday at the Regent Theatre.

My band - the Wellington International Ukulele Orchestra are doing a gig as part of our National Tour, and we want to pack out the Regent Theatre. $5 from each ticket purchased through the '350 Climate Action Group' (not the box office) go straight to funding their important climate action activities.

You can find out more about it here:

Hope to see you there! If you can't make it, please let your friends know.

Cheerio!

Hi Ella, thanks for the message,
Sorry it has taken so long to get back to you. I see I am replying just above Jinty who has just done the course I'm doing :) (Natural History Filmmaking). Your position sounds interesting...we should meet up for (fair trade) coffee sometime! I am in Dunedin for this year and then I have no idea where life will take me.

Hi Ella,

Thanks for your message - great to see so much enthusiasm! Unfortunately I'm not in Dunedin to match it with some action. As of a month ago I'm actually living and working in Raglan/Hamilton with Enviroschools, on a project called ReGeneration. There are some great people in Dunedin that you might like to get in contact with though. If you'd like me to put you in touch with the network, fire me an email on jintymactavish@gmail.com.

All the best!

Jinty

Perfect, except that we're having a baby on the 5th, with pre-admission the day before!

Can try and squeeze something in before then and if not, maybe towards the end of March when I'm back on board?

Great to hear from you, Ella.

I work for Trade Aid on George Stree in Dunedin, so pop in to say hi and have a chinwag any Thursday, Friday or Saturday. We're also trying hard to make Dunedin the 1st Fair Trade City in New Zealand, so join our group on here (Fair Trade Dunedin) and on Facebook (Trade Aid Dunedin) if you're keen to help?

My email's david_a_peck@hotmail.com if you want to be added to our network, as really keen to build a sustainable city with so many like-minded living here!

Cheers again,

Dave
