Areas of interest and expertise
I like many, many things - and I tend to shy away from questions that ask me precisely to definte my interests. Humans are mind-faceted. Nevertheless, here a few things that I have been exploring lately: social entrepreneurship, 4th Sector, Social Media for social Change, Non Profit Technology, P2P Movement, Design Thinking, Innovation/Creativity: in particular looking for patterns in complexity whether it be societal, organisational and/or personal, Spirituality and Personal Development (Buddhist and Taoist lately), Spiral Dynamics and Evolution of Consciousness, Behavioural Economics, Digital Nomadism, Futurism: I like exploring what the norms will be like from change that is happening now, Zen, Eckart Tolle and his teaching: trying to learn the art of being and not doing all the time......
Thanks for the invite! Let me know when you have more details. We had a SI camp in Wellington recently, but only for a few hours. I think the time is coming to grow some stronger connections between Aus and NZ in this space. All the best, Nick
Hi Edward
I loved your comments on "wide achievers" on Kali's page. After years of being a bit defensive about being a 'generalist' I've learned to embrace it! I was also struggling to know what job title to give myself when I went freelance... before I realised I didn't need one :)
This is fast becoming obvious in science (one of my current play grounds) too... many sciences and related funding now ask for interdisciplinary approaches.. and this is highlighting a great gaping hole in terms of training and experience necessary (actually, I would say the *thinking* necessary) for *bridging* technical languages and professional paradigms... it's hard! possibly too hard. maybe we need another way altogether... i suspect that there are many of us already in existence with a natural aptitude for these sort of bridging/collaborating/synthesising roles... it's just that the roles don't exactly exist yet... or maybe we are doing them, they just haven't been articulated... actually, that reminds me of the 'information editor/distillation' role proposed in EPIC 2015, a future-view vid. the science communicators i work with are one of the closest things i've seen to being able to move between disciplines in any kind of agile way which makes me value their company greatly :)
Re: "I am becoming more content with the idea that semantics are irrelevant to define my identity. You define yourself - and change it whenever you see fit. You don't need a job title or description to validate your existence."
Sounds like you are in touch with the source :) that is, well aware of our capacity to create and shift as our interests take us.. a creative life.. (i think of my life as my lab - many experiments!)
An interesting thing for me in that (ie as our awareness grows that we can change often and rapidly if we so choose) is that there is this corresponding trend to capture "identities" online. one of the major features of the virtual world is its persistence through time - ie everything you were and are is there for all to see... the odd thing though is that now that i am more aware, "identities" hold very little meaning for me anymore, they are merely temporary constructs or vehicles for use in a particular problem context ... and once complete with that particular context, the identity is no longer valid or even interesting! Hmmmm... I suppose that is where our core values come into play by (hopefully) pointing to some sort of coherent thread through all the explorations...
Thanks for the TED reference, will check that out later... goody!
I *like* your profile description... really sums up the challenges I often face in self-definition :)
A life coaching class in a 'name-your-passion' exercise recently decided that they would just have to declare my passion as *everything* or, perhaps, just declare me passionate :)
Nice to read others crossing similar terrain so thanks for putting yourself out there.

Your comment reminds me of some of our shamanic explorations this year... particularly increasing awareness around the source from which our "identities" spring... I began to see shamanic awareness as the "play ground for all the possibility, explorations, and shape-shifting that happens *behind* (or underneath?) the identities wedged "out" in spacetime" :)
