With ecological crises, an 'economic crisis' and widening disparity- reorienting our economy to one that is environmentally sustaining and inclusive is a global and local priority.

Jobs in this economy have been given names like green jobs and green collar jobs.
These jobs are said to:
- Rebuild a Strong Middle Class
- Provide Pathways Out of Poverty
- Require Some New Skills (and some new thinking about old skills)
- Tend To Be Local Jobs
- Strengthens Urban and Rural Communities
And By the Way ... Green-Collar Jobs Save Planet Earth

As a leading example of citizens coming together around this:
In the USA, on September 27, 2008, more than 50,000 Americans came together to call for a new green economy strong enough to lift people out of poverty.
From campuses to housing projects, from Native American reservations to Black Churches, nearly 700 communities in all 50 states sent a unified message to their leaders:
"America is ready to build the new economy. We're ready to save people and the planet. We're ready for green jobs now!"

This group is for anyone wanting to help foster an inclusive ecological economy.

There is a discussion forum below. An RSS feed given below brings together jobs that include the word 'sustainability' from trademe, nzherald, seek.co.nz, careerjet, and a number of others. (GoodWorks.co.nz, environmentaljobs.com.au, jobs.govt.nz- dont yet have RSS feeds).

That's not a huge amount of money - but it's a step in the right direction. The NZ government often says it wants to align our climate change response with Australia. Well here's something our government could align itself with - or it could even chose to demonstrate some leadership and go a step further... ;)

I'm interested in hearing from anyone who knows of any pre employment training schemes, alternatives to university education or anything of a similar nature to do with green or sustainability based jobs.

I'm currently researching ways in which young people can 'create their own qualification' after leaving high school that will give them opportunities to do what they love and make a difference as a :"job". So if you know of anything going on or have any information you'd like to pass on please let me know, it'd be much appreciated!

Comment by Nick Potter on January 23, 2009 at 7:46am: The phrase "Green New Deal" appears to have spread (after publications last year like this and UN statements like this), as well as media comments - including this and this useful commentary by Intersect member Gareth.

- Korea has dedicated US$36.4 to green-tinted new developments over the next 4 years.
- Japan plans to create a green business sector worth $1 trillion and employing 2.2m people.
- USA: Obama commits to "sparking a clean energy economy" as part of the US economic stimulus package.

And New Zealand? We're not hearing anything from our elected political servants in government that matches or exceeds this. What can be done to achieve a break through?
