Young Professionals - Leading the Change

Hey everyone,
I've just heard about this awesome knitting movement starting overseas on the radio. It's sparked my imagination for all the amazing public events/spectacles that could be created to raise awareness and put a bit of fun into drab urban environments!

Anyways, if you're interested the link is

Has anyone else heard of other public/subversive crafting and arts movements?

Hi Sue and Amelia,
What brilliant links, I think i'm going to be busy all morning checking those out! I'm quite keen to explore how we can introduce more creative arts and crafts into our cities, I think it fits well into re-skilling ethics of transition towns and permaculture etc but it also provides a wonderful way to reconnect with neighbours, friends, possible friends and members of the community. Recently I've been thinking about the worth of craft groups and how they provide a medium for everyone to get together and have a good chat about everything and anything and support each other.
Also I recently found posters advertising this event,

It looks super exciting, i'm looking forward to going along and meeting more crafty Wellingtonians!

I love these : http://graffitiresearchlab.com/?page_id=6
throwies.
The disturbing thing is that there are buildings with enough electrical equipment in them for there to be a magnetic feild for them to stick to, but they're very cool, none the less.

I stumbled across "The Guerrilla Art Kit" by Keri Smith some days ago - and that in a way turned me from the position of just admiring graffiti and street art and acts of kindness to actually becoming active myself...Have a look at her 100 ideas for being creative here to become inspired instantly: http://www.kerismith.com/funstuff/100ideas.htm

Hey Raven talking of subversive arts movements...
This is like guerilla gardening with a twist. It contextualises Michelle Obama's tearing up the white house lawn for veges as a really radical act!

Ok, best site ever for this stuff:

I think of this kind of art/crafting in a few different ways:
- protest/subversive/raising awareness
- building social capital (eg. leaving $20 on a park bench tied to a card/embroidery with a nice note)
- art/craft to help others (eg. blankets for maternity hospitals, proceeds from sales going to cause X, etc)
- recycled art/craft, creating something from nothing

I'm also very interested in this kind of thing, so if anyone in Aucks wants to meet up and share ideas/inspiration/skills/have a craft partay, it could be fun! I am carless, so will be a bit restricted in my movements (public transport routes/city/eastern suburbs preferred!)
