right on martin, totally cool, i got some good spots around the place that are just screaming out for attention...
heard that the out back of aussie is pretty bad too, but i concentrate on here for now...

ron, you are an inspiration, it is great to have people like you working on our beaches. we will get there down here, start off with some lake and riverside plantings too when it gets to that stage, wickd!

cleaning up the environment and beautifying it and greening it all at the same time, makes a lot of sense to me...

very inspiring, ron!

and a very important lesson about one person taking a stand and the spread & linking that grows from that!

I’ve been considering the question, “What would cause behavioural change in relation to litter?”

We have made some progress in Lyall Bay, Wellington. Here’s the story. A few years ago I would take a bag with me and pick up rubbish as I walked on the beach. While there were maybe 100,000 bits of rubbish on the beach, but at least it was cleaner by the 187 pieces that I picked up.

One day someone else was also picking up rubbish – I found a kindred spirit! We talked and invited others to join us…now there are about 80 people on the email list of the Lyall Bay Coast Care Group. We have a Facebook site. We regularly clean the beach wearing our Lyall Bay Coast Care t-shirts funded by Common Sense Organics, a local shop. Recently we hosted about 40 people to plant 1,000 plants to stabilise the sand dunes. We get in the local newspaper. So, local people are having fun, connecting with and caring for the environment…making a positive difference.

We’ve still got a long way to go in Lyall Bay but we’ve also learned some useful lessons: 1. Take a stand for your local environment. 2. Find kindred spirits. 3. Constantly invite others to join. 4. Seek publicity 4. Expand the range of your activities. 5. Don’t ever give up.

Hi Tim I have a good idea for a photo which will cover both the alcohol & the cigarette butt issue....send me a jpeg of a photo of a pile of cigarette butts say 30cm by 15 cm...I will do some photoshop magic & send you an image they can't refuse!...this will also make a great black'n'white Tshirt image for your cause martinadlington@gmail.com

cool, i get the photo, coz its quiet time now we can show that it may be locals and not tourists that are part of the shame.
can we make a giant cigarette butt suit mascot?

I've been trying to get bars to clean up after their cigarette butt flicking patrons for months...have given up and taken to the fact that they aren't gonna listen, they happy to take the cash out of the community, but not wanting to put anything back...they see it as their right to litter, coz the council wont let them trade on their balcony's after ten pm as their punters are too noisy...
