Uncle Nick, can you please explain the processes of sending mail to Intersect members. I have noticed that there is an envelope icon on pages of my Intersect friends and if I click on this I can send a message, what if I want to send a message to someone I don't actually know - do I need to *be -friend* them first? And what about sending a message to more than one person?

Thanks for asking! You can leave a comment on anyone's page as an Intersect member and they'll normally get an email to let them know they've received a comment. However you can only send a private message (via the envelope) to your special friends.

Members of groups (e.g. 'The Aucks' or 'Wellycats') can broadcast a message to all members of that group (though we can turn this function off if people dont' like it). If you want to send a message to all members of Intersect, just contact any of the Intersect Crew.

Privacy!
People, if you don't want your profile information to come up in searches, you need to modify your privacy settings.
Here is a screenshot to show you how to do this:

It is the case that once a bot has found you, it will create its own cache until it does an update. This might take a while - I thought Google would be in the order of 24 hours, but it is actually quite a bit longer.

In the interim - you might want to hide bits of your profile that you consider to be private - and when the bots have gone through again and discovered your new security settings then you can put them up again. Perhaps you can copy and paste the info that you want to keep into a word doc so that you don't have to write it again from scratch.

Also- if you shuffle some of the content about - upload a new photo or two then that might encourage a bot to search it again faster! (Just an idea - I have no idea if that would work or not! Can someone eith some tech knowledge confirm this?)

Feel free to contact me if you have trouble. Cheers, Megan

Hi, I was wondering about setting up discussion groups..are there any guidelines around this, can anyone do it. I was thinking of an interesting topic to discuss and couldnt see a group it particularly fitted to...how does it work? thanku :)

Hi Kareana

You're very welcome to set up a discussion group... in fact we totally encourage it!

We don't have any rules for this, so long as it's in the spirit of the general ground rules.

All the groups have been set up by different individuals. Some have found lots of interest, while others are a bit dormant. Feel free to set one up, have a play and see how much interest it gets. Alternatively, you can set up a discussion in the forum if it's just a conversation you're wanting to have (and not a group for ongoing discussions / actions).

Hopefully that helps, Nick

Is 'Content Awaiting Approval - 1 Group Invite(Intersect Crew)'
the crew's way of saying -'we will not be intimidated by people trying to force their way onto the crew and feel prepared to repel any emerging factions seeded by this outrage' ?

Turrence - I just sent you a message in response to your question...

Hi Trustees,

I am new to the area and am looking for some work in sustainability. Therefore, I was wondering if anyone knows of any good avenues to get myself out there. I am on a one year working exchange and looking for some possible contract work. I am currently stationed in Auckland but am able and willing to work anywhere in New Zealand. Does anyone know of any companies or oraganizations that may be worth checking out?

Thanks,

John

Hi John. Welcome to Aotearoa! As a starter, you can pop a notice up in the Job Board forum. You may also want to contact some of the Auckland Intersectors - such as Carl or Jasmine.

You may find it easier to get contract work in Auckland than Wellington at the moment - as central government is dominant here but currently tightening up on spending. Given your interests in renewable energy, you may also want to check out options through the Sustainable Energy Forum.

Good luck!
Nick

Thanks Nick. Can't believe I didn' t see the job board. I am hoping more opportunity will present itself as we get further into 2009.

Hi John,

You might also want to check out the Jobs tagged sustainability feed on the Green Jobs for All group. This aggregates jobs from TradeMe, CareerJet, SEEK, that include the word 'sustainability'.
