Event Description

A film screening for Intersect members in the capital.

You'll have two choices on the night. We watch the film with the most votes! This month you can choose from:

Heima:

This film doesn't have an obvious 'sustainability' theme - until you let its magic wash over you. It follows Sigur Ros (a band from Iceland) when they return home to give a series of free concerts across Iceland. It is visually astonishing and deeply moving. The juxtaposition of opposites is seen and heard throughout this film (eg: light and shadow, life and death, motion and stillness, perfection and imperfection, young and old) which suggests the circularity of life. Heima also presents the viewer with an all-encompassing look at the beauty of Iceland as a segment of a much larger picture, Earth. This film is perfectly accentuated by the music of Sigur Ros.

Manufactured Landscapes:

A documentary on the world and work of artist Edward Burtynsky. Burtynsky makes large-scale photographs of 'manufactured landscapes' -- quarries, recycling yards, factories, mines, dams. He photographs civilization's materials and debris, but in a way people describe as "stunning" or "beautiful," and so raises all kinds of questions about ethics and aesthetics without trying to easily answer them. The film has an approach of presenting complexity without trying to reach simplistic judgements or reductive resolutions. In the process, it tries to shift our consciousness about the world and the way we live in it.

The chosen film will start at 630pm sharp so that we're done by 8pm. But there are benefits in arriving early... at 615pm Joshua will give a quick presentation on using digital technologies for social change (focusing on Twitter as an example).

Please RSVP for this event if you would like to come.

Entry is by koha to pay for use of the space (all proceeds to On The Edge trust).
