You may remember Yann Arthus-Bertrand from the exhibition 'The Earth from Above' at Waitangi Park during the 2006 New Zealand International Arts Festival. Like the photo exhibition, this film has been shot entirely from the sky and takes us 'on a sensational journey above planet Earth' and provides us with an unusual portrait of its current state: its beauty, but also evidence of the threats posed to it by human activity. As the accompanying background document states : "It's too late to be a pessimist".
Message from the director
‘We are living in exceptional times. Scientists tell us that we have 10 years to change the way we live, to avert the depletion of natural resources and the catastrophic evolution of the Earth’s climate. The stakes are high for us and our children. We have no time to lose. I have been nurturing this film for more than fifteen years. What I saw and learnt as I flew over the Earth has changed me for ever. I would like this movie to become your movie. Share it and act!’
About the director
Yann Arthus-Bertrand is a passionate artist and photographer, and an advocate of nature protection and sustainable development. His ‘Earth from Above’ series, an exhibit of large-scale aerial photography, explores the link between man and nature and encourages viewers to think of the evolution of our planet and the fate of its inhabitants. The exhibit premiered in Paris in 2000 to unprecedented success and went on to travel to cities around the world; by 2008 it had reached over 130 million people on every continent. For his exhibition, ‘6 Billion Others’, he captured testimonials of the lives of some 6000 people in more than 65 countries in the form of film vignettes.
